Happy Buzzard Day, for those who celebrate
Did you know Northern Ohioans celebrate the return of the buzzards to Hinckley every year on March 15? The town of Hinckley celebrates with an annual festival to mark the return of flocks of turkey buzzards to the Hinckley Reservation, a buzzard-friendly area with rocky ledges, open fields, and forests. My mother, Lauren Rose, marked the occasion each year, and as kids we always wondered why she started celebrating St. Patrick’s Day a few days earlier than everyone else.
I found out recently that one of my mother’s best friends in high school, Eileen O’Neill, was from Hinckley, and she’s the one who got my mother to start celebrating the return of the buzzards (and continuing the celebration all through St. Patrick’s Day as well). Eileen and my mother would find any reason at all to have a party and be with their friends – even buzzards.
I believe it is this type of friendship and joy that led my mother to be adamant in her belief that community living was the best place for older adults. I remember her sharing as I was growing up how much she loved the idea that she’d always have friends nearby to talk to and laugh with.
These communities allow older adults to keep the friendships that are so dear to them while giving them the opportunity to build new connections and cultivate new relationships. With the compassionate caregivers and reliable staff supporting members and their health, older adults can focus on the people around them and foster amazing friendships with their fellow community members. Communities in more than just name, these campuses encourage social activities and help seniors spend less time worrying and planning and more time celebrating and enjoying themselves with the people they love.
My mother has always known that life is precious and it’s important to take advantage of every chance you have to spend time with the people who matter to you. Eileen passed away of leukemia in her early 20s. As time went on, Mom made other friends to celebrate with, but she always toasted her Irish friend, Eileen.
So today and every day, find something to celebrate and something to feel joyful about – even if it’s an ugly bird on the side of the road.
